Choosing an MP3 PlayerAn MP3 Player is a reasonable sized investment of your hard earned cash so it's important that you get the right one for you. Read our guide below to understand the different options and what they mean to you. What will you use it for?Firstly you need to decide what you want from your MP3 Player. Will it be for jogging, running, cycling or some other activity that will see the player being bounced about quite a bit, or will you be using it exclusively at home or in the office? If you'll be using the MP3 Player and fall into the first group then you will probably want a flash memory based device, since hard drives can be damaged by the shock of bouncing about and are possibly prone to skipping when bounced. For home/office use then either option is available and your decision will need to be based on the budget you have versus the features you want. How much storage do you need?In general it is a good idea to buy the most storage you can afford. Even if you don't think you'll need it now in a few months time you'll be glad to have the additional space. While it's impossible to say how many songs will fit on any given device as a general rule we've found that you can roughly get one normal album in 32MB's of storage. How do you transfer music to the MP3 Player? How you transfer music to the MP3 Player is an important aspect of the experience with your new MP3 Player, most modern devices support the relatively fast USB2 and appear on your computer as and additional removable drive. Some devices use CF cards or SD RAM which have the added benefit that you can purchase additional storage for them. It's also worth noting that some players provide bespoke software to upload the MP3 files. It's worth avoiding the ones that include some form of DRM (Digital Rights Management). While we do not encourage you to breach copyright, we have had bad experiences with such software and the lack of support for future version of operating systems, plus they may well stop you using your hard disk drive based MP3 Player as an external portable hard disk drive. What about the user interface? The simplest MP3 players interact with your computer as a additional hard drive or folder and require no extra software to be installed on your computer. Some of the more advanced software interfaces will allow you to create playlists on the computer and then upload them to the MP3 Player. It is important to consider the user interface on the MP3 Player itself, it is after all the part you will use most often, and a clunky interface on the player will mar your experience with the player. Key features to look out for are folder management, playlist management, repeat, skip, equaliser settings and details of the current song / folder being played. What does those features really mean?
Folders - The ability to group music into folders (i.e. group music by artist/album). Do you want support for other file formats?A number of more modern MP3 Players also offer support for WMA or ORG Vorbis files, both formats have their advantages but we would suggest that if you're not already familiar with the file formats then they are probably not going to offer you any benefits. What about the battery? Many modern players include their own rechargable lithium ion battery asa such it's important to check that the exepected duration that you will want from the MP3 Player between charges. Some MP3 Players still use a standard AAA akaline battery which has the benefit of being cheaply and widely available and you can use your own rechargable if you prefer. Do you need or want an FM tuner? This is entirely down to personal preference, it's likely that over the coming years most if not all will include an FM tuner as standard. MP3 Player accessories. There are a wide range of accessories available however it's worth noting that many of the less popular brands offer better value for money and include many useful accessories in the pack.
